Portrait of Kendrick Lamar, 2x3 Grid Illustration
In VART 2003, Graphic Design and Digital Tools, I was tasked with creating a “portrait” of a public figure of my choice. I selected Kendrick Lamar. Each square has a different image that represents some aspect of his public identity.
The first illustration is of Kendrick Lamar’s childhood home in Compton.
The second is the album art for DAMN., his fourth studio album, which was the most recent at the time.
Third, the crown represents his popular title as the “King of Rap.”
The hand gesture is the symbol for HiiiPoWeR, a song from his debut album Section.80. This song demonstrates Lamar’s interest in enlightenment and activism. Each “i”, and finger, represents heart, honor, and respect.
The next image is based on his Spotify profile picture, which I chose to use as his traditional portrait.
The bottom right square has his name, title, and the letter “K” inside of a black dot, nodding to his stage name when he first began his career, K.Dot.
